A 12-year-old boy has died after being hit by a football while enjoying a kickabout with his mates.
The young lad was playing in the school playground when tragedy struck.
After being hit by the ball, the boy fell to the ground and started convulsing before sadly being confirmed dead at La Salle de Sestao School in Spain’s Basque Country at about 8.30pm.
Paramedics on the scene tried to revive the boy, who was of Senegalese origin, but to no avail.
According to Sestao mayoress, Ainhoa Basabe, the victim’s friends said the shot that killed him was not very strong and that he may have been eating something at that moment.
The official added: “He bent over and went into cardiorespiratory arrest.

“The police and ambulance arrived very quickly, within three minutes, and a defibrillator from the school itself was also used, but it was not possible to revive him.”
Psychologists from the Basque Health Service arrived on the scene to offer support to the boy’s devastated relatives.
The mayoress said: “All human loss is painful, but when someone leaves us so young, the pain is always greater. It is terrible.”

The school keeps the playground open on weekends for residents to use the outside facilities.
A school spokesperson expressed their condolences to the victim’s family.
Meanwhile, officials said they would remain in contact with the victim’s relatives to offer psychological support.
