Schoolboy, 14, 'could have been killed' in brutal beating by mob of 15

A schoolboy is lucky to be alive after being punched and stamped on by a gang of 15 in an apparently motiveless attack, his mum said.

Fourteen-year-old Mohammed Idris had been walking to a gym near his home with a friend when he was set upon and beaten in Birmingham.

He was left with a head injury after the mob punched him to the ground and assaulted him and had to be taken to hospital, BirminghamLive reports.

His mother Shafina, 35, said she was thankful her son hadn’t suffered any internal injuries, but was now ‘petrified’ to go out.

“He could’ve been killed,” the mum-of-five said. “He was face down and they were stamping on his head. Thankfully, there are no internal injuries.

“He’s petrified that this will happen again and he’s still recovering from the injuries. He’s scared to go back to the same area.”

The youngster had apparently been minding his own business when the gang suddenly began beating him (The youngster had apparently been minding his own business when the gang suddenly began beating him)

Police have launched an investigation following reports of the attack, which happened in broad daylight.

Mohammed was walking to a local gym along Plaistow Avenue in Washwood Heath, with his friend when the gang struck for no reason on Wednesday, May 19.

The teenager managed to get home and his shocked mother called for an ambulance which took him to Heartlands Hospital. He was treated for cuts, bruises and a black eye and left the hospital after two hours.

After the beating Mohammed was warned not to tell anyone, but he said he could identify some of those involved.

His mother has kept him away from school since the violence.

“Mohammed is just a normal schoolboy - he’s not into gangs or anything like that,” Shafina explained. “Police have said they need to see CCTV. I know three of the houses where the attack took place have CCTV.

“I’ve spoken to officers, but they haven’t been round yet.”

“This could’ve been much, much worse. He didn’t lose consciousness, but he was face down and they were stamping on his head. I rang for an ambulance because he had a head injury.”

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We are investigating an assault in Washwood Heath, which happened around 1.50pm on Wednesday, May 19.

“A 14-year-old boy was attacked by a group of youths and sustained bruising to his face. His injuries are not life threatening or changing.
