West Midlands police tweeted the teenager was shot while walking down the street in Hockley Circus, Birmingham, just after 7pm last night.

They said they were called to reports of a gunshot and an ambulance, including two paramedics and a doctor from the Medical Emergency Response Incident Team (MERIT), attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one patient, a teenage male, who was treated for serious injuries before being taken to hospital for further treatment," a statement reads.

The boy is understood to have suffered life-changing injuries.

Hockley Circus will remain closed for "most of the morning" as forensic teams carry out inquiries at the scene, police said.
