Schoolboy, 13, died just eight days after being diagnosed with leukaemia

A teenager died just eight days after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia.

James O'Mara had gone to A&E after feeling sick for a few days but was quickly transferred to Birmingham's Children's Hospital following his diagnosis.

However, just one week later the 13-year-old passed away after suffering rapid organ failure.

Two years on from his death in June 2017, the schoolboy's devastated family are trying to raise funds for a charity they have set up in his name.

James' aunt Nicola O'Mara,  who lives in St Minver, told Cornwall Live : "My 13-year-old nephew died nearly two years ago from a very aggressive form leukaemia.

"He was diagnosed and eight days later he died.

A fundraising page set up in James' honour explained: "He was so unwell they decided to treat him on intensive care and started chemo straight away, by this time we were told he had Acute Myeloid Leukaemia - an aggressive form of leukaemia.

"For one week, whilst under sedation, he tried to battle against the odds with the help of the most amazing doctors and nurses medication and 89 units of blood products.

"One nurse performed a blood transfusion by hand, taking out with one syringe and putting in with another.

"The nurses worked 12 hour shifts and literally did not stop during that time.

"Unfortunately, after one week, on June 8 2017 James' body couldn't fight anymore, all of his organs were under attack and his body just couldn't take it.

"His liver had failed and his body was being poisoned leading to multi organ failure."

In a bid to support James' charities, Mrs O'Mara's daughter Lola, 8, chopped off her long hair and donated it the Little Princess Trust.
