Schoolboy, 12, seriously injured in hospital after being hit by a bus in Consett

A 12-year-old boy is seriously injured in hospital after a collision with a bus.

The schoolboy remains in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle following the incident in Consett on Tuesday afternoon.

It is believed the child got off the bus on Sherburn Terrace and proceeded to run alongside the vehicle at around 3.40pm.

Police say he then fell from the footpath onto the carriageway and collided with the bus.

His condition in hospital is described as "serious".

An investigation is now under way.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Anyone who witnessed the incident or with dashcam footage is asked to call PC Mark Cudden on 101 quoting reference number 288 of July 16."
