School that 'succeeds where no one else can' hailed after 'incredible' performance

A Liverpool school that deals with pupils who aren't able to attend mainstream institutions is praised in a recently released Ofsted report for helping kids turn their lives around.

Inspectors praised Harmonize Academy, a Pupil Referral Unit in Kensington, for helping struggling students achieve their dreams of going to university, getting into acting and joinging the armed forces.

Pupil Referral Units are a type of school for children who can't attend mainstream schools.

This could be for a variety of reasons from behavioural and medical problems to those suffering from bullying or who have been permanently excluded from other schools.

Inspectors said the academy's work restored the faith of pupils in the education system and that they developed into "respectful, caring and considerate young people".

The report said: "‘This school succeeds where no one else can’. This sums up the view of all those pupils who spoke with us during the inspection.

"Before joining Harmonize Academy AP Free School, many pupils and their families have lost faith in the education system. When they arrive at this school, pupils turn their lives around.

"They engage once again with education. They succeed in examinations and they move on to apprenticeships and college courses.

"Former pupils have gone on to university, joined the armed forces or
landed their dream acting job."

Inspectors said pupils at the school demonstrate excellent work ethic in working to make up for lost time and said they are supported by a team of staff who know them "exceptionally well".

Cabinet member for education Barbara Murray said the academy was doing "incredible work".

Councillor Murray said: “Congratulations to Harmonize Academy on their amazing Ofsted report.

“They are doing incredible work supporting young people to do the very best they can. Pupils, staff and parents should all be very proud. I am looking forward to visiting them again soon to congratulate everyone.”

Director of children's services Steve Reddy has also written Harmonize Academy to congratulate the staff and students.
