School students still without email since distressing incident

Police are investigating the school email breach.

ACT public school students remain locked out of their school email accounts after an email breach which led to thousands of students receiving explicit content and some instances of bullying and harassment.

The Education Directorate is continuing to remove inappropriate content from student Gmail accounts after email distribution lists were circulated by students on Friday.

A directorate spokesman said Google Drive and Google Classroom access was reinstated on Monday but email access was not expected to be restored until the end of this week.

"Education Directorate have engaged an external consultant to provide advice and oversight, as well as rigorous testing to make sure the system is safe and secure," the spokesman said.

A small number of students used it to bully and harass other students in what authorities have described as a "distressing and extremely regrettable" incident.

"These matters are being taken very seriously and the Education Directorate is working across schools to ensure consistent and appropriate action is taken," the spokesman said.

"We continue to engage with ACT Policing on this matter and will be discussing this matter with the students involved, and their families, prior to determining what action will be taken."

An ACT Policing spokeswoman said police were working with the directorate and had identified the source of the emails.

The eSafety Commissioner has also been notified.
