School set for expansion as battle for pupil places in city continues

A south Liverpool school is set to be expanded as attempts continue to expand the number of places for pupils in key areas of the city.

The council's cabinet will approve plans for Booker Avenue Infants School in Allerton to build a single floor extension and expand its play area.

It comes as parents prepare to choose their final preferences for where they would like their children to attend next year.

The battle for places in some neighbourhoods is fierce - and Booker Avenue has been identified as a school requiring a so-called 'bulge year', a quicker and less expensive way of expanding a school when predictions show a rise in pupil numbers will not be sustained.

It will result in an increase of 30 places and require the temporary relocation of the school's foundation stage.

While the report says Liverpool has enough school places to accommodate all children it warns there are not enough in some areas where demand is particularly high.

The report says: "There are areas within the City where demand
significantly outstrips current place availability.

"Several schools have been expanded over the last few years, however there is still significant need in some areas."

Planning approval for the school's expansion was granted in July - and the cabinet report next week will authorise the £622,800 needed to build the extension.

According to council figures, the number of pupils in local authority schools between reception and Year 11 has increased by 8.3% between 2013 and 2019.
