Friday marked the last school day before the long-awaited summer vacation at municipal elementary and junior high schools in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, although the summer break has been shortened at elementary and junior high schools around the nation amid the spread of the new coronavirus.
A school-wide morning meeting was held at the Sumida municipal Daisanazuma Elementary School using screens such as TVs in each classroom, to avoid the so-called Three Cs -- close spaces with poor ventilation, crowded places and conversations in close proximity.
"We have a short summer vacation this year, but I want to relax at home," a second-grade student said. Another second-grader said, "Summer vacation makes me miss everyone at school, so it's great the holiday is short this year."
The summer vacation will end on Aug. 23 in the ward.
