School run parent caught blocking drive asked police 'don't you know who I am?'

A parent who was caught blocking a driveway while dropping children off at an East Midlands school stunned officers when they asked '"don't you know who I am?".

Police were also stunned by the responses from other brazen parents caught blocking driveways in Stenson Fields, Derbyshire, with one saying, "I’ve driven a long way today and I don’t have time for this," and another who told officers, "I’ve been coming here for years blocking that pavement."

Derbyshire police officers from the Mercia Safer Neighbourhood Team said they had received reports about "inappropriate and unseemly parking" in Goathland Road, near Stenson Fields Primary School, so decided to check it out for themselves.

They carried out patrols in the area and spoke to parents who were dropping off their children and caught causing problems, saying they were taken aback by some of the excuses drivers gave.

Some parents were also caught blocking the pavements, a police spokesman said.

He said all those who blocked driveways were spoken to in no uncertain terms and told to stop doing it.

It is not known who the parent was who seemed to think officers should know who they were.

A spokesman for the team said: "This kind of conduct brings upset to local residents, as well as making young people's journeys to school so much more difficult. It was wonderful to work with the school, and its fantastic headteacher, to address this issue."

The spokesman added that a number of local residents had made contact with them to say how pleased they were to see officers out patrolling and tackling bad parkers.

They added: "Mercia Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) delight in patrolling villages and towns in our beautiful policing beat area.

"We relish engaging with residents and hearing about issues that concern them.

"We're privileged to see so many wonderful acts of selflessness and kindness in our communities, especially during the current pandemic.

"From a good-hearted couple in Willington who keep an eye out for their vulnerable neighbour to a generous gentleman in Stenson Fields who continues to pick up his housebound friend's shopping, we salute you.

"With regret, we occasionally get reports of a different nature – and sometimes this involves people behaving in a selfish manner, acting without care or consideration for others."
