School return dates: Everything parents need to know as 'phased return' to classrooms confirmed

Students will begin returning to classrooms next week under a new deal between Government and teaching unions.

The move will see those sitting the Leaving Cert, along with pupils between junior infants and second class return on March 1.

Pre-schools will be allowed to return on March 8, while remaining primary and 5th year students will be back from March 15.

All childcare will be back in business by the end of the month, while all secondary school students will be returning on April 12 - after the Easter holidays.

The news was confirmed in a state of the nation address by Taoiseach Micheal Martin on Tuesday evening.

He said: "Firstly, we will start the phased and safe return of in-school education.

"From 1 March, we will re-open our schools for junior infants to second class, and Leaving Certificate students. This will involve the return of over 320,000 pupils.

"This reopening will be monitored, and the plan then will be for all outstanding classes in Primary Schools and 5 years in Secondary Schools to return on the 15 March.

"The aim then is for all outstanding classes to return after the Easter break.

"Secondly, we will expand the reopening of childcare. From 8 March, the early childhood pre-school programme will reopen for all participating children.

"From 29 March, subject to public health advice, other restrictions will be lifted so that all other children can return to early learning and childcare services."

While the return of schools will be welcome to most, he sadly confirmed that Level Five restrictions will be in place until at least April 5.

Nothing major is set to change between now and then, after Mr Martin confirmed to the Irish Mirror last week that "significant measures" will be in place until May.

The 5km rule will remain in place until at least that date, with people being urged to stay at home with the exception of going out for exercise or other essential reasons.

There were no real surprises for the average punter in the new plan, with pubs, restaurants and other sections hospitality industry staying shut until June.

Non-essential retail will also remain closed until further notice.

However, construction will also begin returning on a phased basis in the coming weeks.

The Government wanted to assure people that they will soon be able to get outdoors for sports and activities as it’s good for our mental health, but no firm dates were promised.
