School pupils help West Lothian Food Bank to raise profile of UNICEF

Pupils from Whitburn Academy have been going the extra mile to help their community.

The school’s Rights Respecting Schools (RRS) Committee - who focus on the UNICEF Rights of the Child and ensuring the pupils in our school are aware of their rights - have been involved in a number of events to raise the profile of their work.

To raise awareness of the different rights the committee decided to run an event that would focus on Article 27; ‘You have the right to food, clothing, a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met’.

Lauryn Dickson, who leads the committee, said: “To do this we organised a whole school Christmas jumper/dress down day where each pupil and member of staff paid a food donation, rather than the usual £1 fee that would be donated to the West Lothian Food Bank.

“The response was incredible and we had to organise for the Food Bank to come to the school with their van to pick up the donations.

“As part of the RRS article awareness campaign we will be fundraising in the community in the future to raise money for fun activities for the pupils of the school.”
