School pupils help clean up East Kilbride streets with litter picking

Pupils from Calderglen High School in East Kilbride did their bit to help members of the St Leonards community with some litter picking.

St Leonards Community Council invited the school to be involved in keeping the surrounding area tidy.

This tied in nicely with a project the school was doing, with children being told the importance of keeping the environment tidy and being responsible for their litter.

As part of that, pupils – armed with litter pickers kindly supplied by South Lanarkshire Council – took to the streets to do their bit and keep the area tidy.

The council helped ensure the litter collected was properly recycled after and Karen McMillan from the community council said the pupils showed “a lot of enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon”.

The community council have also been busy with St Leonards in Bloom, with new signage installed at the area of land recently brought back to life.

Community members took to St Leonards square to plant bulbs and winter foliage, just in time for the colder weather.

Their efforts have seen the square spruced up, helping to transform a rundown area of it.

Council workers had killed off the weeds in a section near the shopping centre, before community council members made it more presentable.
