School pupils from Hammersmith plant 6,000 trees across west London

Pupils from a school in Hammersmith have planted 6,000 trees across west London.

More than 1,200 students from Latymer Upper School set out thousands of saplings and hedgerows yesterday.

The school believes it has set a “green record” by planting the largest number of trees in London by one school within 24 hours.

Trees, paid for through the pupils’ fundraising efforts, were planted across Acton Park, Southfields Playing Fields, Elthorne Park, Twyford Crescent and Blondin Park.

Others were donated by the Mayor’s “plant-a-thon” scheme and charity The Community Volunteers. Nearly 200 of the school’s primary pupils will plant a further 800 trees in Frank Banfield Park on Friday.

Head David Goodhew said: “They are doing their bit to help improve air quality for the local community.”
