School pupils descend on George Square as Glasgow takes part in global climate protests

This afternoon, hundreds of  students descended on George Square to protest against climate change and its impact on their future.

School children and university students were in attendance today as Glasgow took part in ‘school strikes’ coordinated across Britain and the world.

Earlier this month, the Scottish Government agreed to set a target of net-zero emissions by 2045, while Glasgow pledged to become the UK’s first ‘net-zero’ city.

In Glasgow, pictures have been flooding in through the afternoon showing clever captions and hilarious banners made by the creative school pupils of the city.

The event in the city centre was well mannered and peaceful, with Green MSP Patrick Harvey in attendance posing for photos with some protestors.

Climate protests originated in August 2018 as the brainchild of Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg, who began one herself. Since then, they have been mirrored by thousands upon thousands of young people from across the world.

While the protest took place in Glasgow, similar events happened in Aberdeen and Edinburgh as well as other cities and towns throughout the country.

Speaking to Glasgow Live after the protest, one pupil, Katie Raymond (15) said she had been inspired by her parents fight against apartheid in South Africa.

She said: “I was inspired by my parents who took part in strikes in Aparthied South Africa, because they made the difference and fought for a just society. I’ve always loved nature and I’ve never understood why people don’t fight for their planet because without it there is no future.

“I am fighting for my life. I am fighting for our future.”
