A school in Newport was locked down over fears a pupil had brought a gun on to the premises. After staff and students at St Julian's High School in Heather Road were told to stay in their classrooms it was later established that the gun was made of plastic.
WalesOnline understands the situation lasted a matter of minutes on Monday morning before staff and students were given the all-clear. The school has since emailed parents explaining what happened.
The email reads: “We had a very brief lockdown situation this morning following reports of a student with a BB gun on site. We were unable to locate the student so the school went into a lockdown situation. All the students were told to stay in classrooms.
“The student has since been found and the gun was a plastic prop toy gun. The situation is now under control and lessons have resumed as normal.”
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: "Officers attended St Julian’s High School, Newport, following a report that a student was seen with an imitation firearm on Monday, April 17 at around 9.50am. An intimation firearm was seized by officers at the scene."
A Newport council spokeswoman said: "Staff at St Julian's School took appropriate action, including a brief lockdown, following an incident involving a pupil. The police were contacted and the school will be following its usual disciplinary procedures."
