School placed on lockdown with 'children hiding under desks' during police manhunt

A school was placed in lockdown as police launched a manhunt in the area.

The dramatic incident unfolded at Kingsway School in Cheadle this morning at around 10am.

There were reports of a large police presence in the area and the school was advised to activate its lockdown procedure as part of inquiries.

It is understood there was no direct threat to the school, but officers from Greater Manchester Police were searching for a suspect in the immediate vicinity.

One mum said on social media that she 'freaked' after getting a phone call from her daughter who was 'hiding under a desk'.

A spokesperson later confirmed a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assualt.

It is understood this relates to a domestic incident.

Kingsway School said the lockdown procedure had been activated 'purely as a precaution' and that 'at no time was there a direct threat to any of our students.

A statement read: "At approximately 10am the school applied its Lockdown procedure in response to a police incident in our local community."

"At no time was there a direct threat to any of our students, and that the decision to authorise the lockdown was purely a precaution to ensure our students’ safety.

"We were in regular contact with the police during the incident which has now been resolved, and lifted the Lockdown as soon as appropriate.

"A regular school timetable is now operating."
