School pipe band bring New York's Grand Central Station to standstill with performance

A pipe band brought Grand Central Station to a standstill as their 48 members surprised commuters with some tunes ahead of their appearance in the New York City Tartan Day Parade.

The North Lanarkshire Schools Pipe Band decided to grab their instruments when passing through the iconic train station and put on a piping hot performance.

Within a few seconds, hundreds of curious commuters stopped to record the show, quickly escalating to the thousands. The band uploaded a clip online, which has already been shared over 7,000 times and generated almost half a million views.

Grand Central Station’s manager shut the flash mob down after two songs - Scotland the Brave and Rowan Tree - but waited until the full song was done, assumedly enjoying the show himself.

Pipe Major, Ross Cowan, said:  “It’s our first time in New York and we wanted to make the most of it. Grand Central Station is one of the busiest spots in Manhattan so we figured what better place to give the locals a taste of Scotland ahead of our appearance at the New York City Tartan Day Parade. We certainly attracted quite the crowd!”

The band were invited to travel from Scotland to take part in this year’s New York City Tartan Day Parade, which takes place today.

The parade sees 3,000 participants - including solo pipers, drummers, full pipe bands and highland dancers - march from 44th to 55th Street along Sixth Avenue and over 30,000 spectators are expected to line the streets to cheer them on.

This year’s parade will be led by Sir Billy Connolly as Grand Marshal.
