School officials invite community to show support for fallen officer

Sept. 05--Grass Lake School District 36 officials are encouraging residents to pay tribute to Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz as his funeral procession passes the Antioch school on Monday.

Gliniewicz, 52, was fatally shot while on patrol in Fox Lake Tuesday, authorities have said.

Large crowds are expected to pay their respects at Gliniewicz's funeral at Antioch High School Monday, so Grass Lake officials wanted to offer another location to help alleviate congestion, said Superintendent Terry O'Brien.

Gliniewicz and his four sons graduated from Grass Lake, an elementary and junior high school, O'Brien said.

"He was a real visible presence in the community here," O'Brien said. "All the staff knew him."

The public viewing will begin at 9 a.m. at Antioch High School at 1133 Main St., the Lake County sheriff's office said. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. at the high school, and a procession after the service will lead to a burial at Hillside East Cemetery, also in Antioch.

The district is inviting people to line the street outside the school at 26177 W. Grass Lake Road as the funeral procession passes by after 1 p.m. and is encouraging people to wear blue and black to show support for law enforcement, O'Brien said.

O'Brien said the district also hopes to have a live video feed from the funeral in the school's gymnasium.

"Once a Brave, always a Brave," he said in a news release about the event.
