School of Rock brings West End magic back to Sunderland Empire

Big show glamour makes its return to Sunderland Empire this week with the arrival of a West End hit that is bringing a welcome blast of music and colour to make up for the theatre's long months of lockdown closure.

School of Rock - the Musical is its first big show from the heart of London's theatre-land since the Empire's reopening this autumn, marking another milestone for the city venue on its journey back to normality.

And the first night of the Andrew Lloyd Webber show - on Wednesday - will be a special gala performance to thank its supporters.

Theatre director Marie Nixon said: “The response from our audiences, partners and friends has been truly overwhelming and we’re so thankful that everyone in Sunderland and beyond has welcomed us back with open arms.

"We are absolutely thrilled that audiences are returning to enjoy the very best in live theatrical entertainment."

This is the first ever tour of School of Rock - based on the popular movie starring Jack Black which sees failed rock star Dewey Finn pose as a substitute teacher and turn his class of A students into a rock band - which had its debut in New York in 2015 and has since picked up Tony nominations and an Olivier Award.

And the much-loved Sunderland Empire has plenty top show treats to come.

Marie added: "It’s time to celebrate the great shows coming to Sunderland and the developing Arts and Culture scene in Sunderland as a whole.

"We have an outstanding programme of events coming up and together with all the fantastic developments happening across Sunderland, it really is an exciting time for the city.”
