School of Rock at Sunderland Empire is set to be a blast as new show prepares for big UK tour

Musical favourite School of Rock - a West End and Broadway hit - is coming to Sunderland next year, it has been announced.

The Andrew Llloyd Webber show, based on the hugely popular 2003 film starring Jack Black, is to have a week-long run at Sunderland Empire towards the end of 2021.

The award-winning musical, about a rock-lover who poses as a teacher and then encourages his class of A students to form an anarchic band, is packed with all the songs from the movie plus 14 extras to music by Webber and it promises a high-octane night out.

In a further draw for Sunderland theatre-goers, there is a love story too - among the stomping music and guitar riffs - which involves the school's uptight headmistress who rediscovers her wild child within.

School of Rock - The Musical, which has a book written by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, will be at Sunderland Empire from November 29 until December 4, 2021.

Its cast has yet to be announced. For more about what's on at the theatre, see here .
