School of Rock actors visit Newcastle

ZANE Blumeris' decision to answer an audition flyer led to his professional production debut, which has already taken him from Melbourne to China, Brisbane and Auckland.

"It's been incredible," Zane, 13, said of the past two years, while on a promotional visit to Newcastle.

"The audiences in China laughed in different spots and were really supportive."

Zane is playing "100 per cent my dream role", as student Zack Mooneyham in School of Rock, based on the 2003 film with new music from Andrew Lloyd Webber and showing at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney to March 1.

The performers play their instruments live on stage.

Zane has earned rave reviews for his guitar expertise, despite only picking one up three years ago.

Joe Kosky, 29, who shares the lead role of teacher Dewey Finn with Brent Hill, said Zane was at a "professional level - as in, 'sit in the pit and play for anyone' level".

Kosky said both Zane and Zac were humble.

"I don't think either of them appreciate the gravity of what they can do at this stage," he said.

"We show how remarkable they are and remind them of that."

Kosky said the best part of his role was working with young actors.

"The energy they all bring because they're genuinely discovering and learning and loving it... is magical."

Kosky, who had been "hanging out" for the show to arrive, said the most challenging part of stepping into the role made famous by Jack Black was the physical and vocal stamina required.

"The creative team were good at supporting us as individuals with what we could bring to the table," he said.

"Jack Black already put his stamp on the role and is written into it, so you've got to trust that and add your own flavour."
