School issues statement after parent of pupil is hospitalised with coronavirus

A school has issued a statement confirming that a parent of a pupil is in hospital with coronavirus.

A letter has been sent to parents at Aldercar High School in Daltons Close, Langley Mill, informing them of the situation, Derbyshire Live reports .

The parent is being treated at Royal Derby Hospital. It is not known how serious their illness is.

The family of the parent are in self-isolation. The virus has killed 35 people in the UK so far, including one person who was being treated at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Clare Hatto said the school would remain open following advice from Public Health England.

She said: "I am writing to advise you that a parent of one of our students has tested positive for COVID-19.

"This person is now under the care of the Royal Derby Hospital. As a precautionary measure, the affected family are in self-isolation at home for the next seven days having been in contact with NHS111.

"As a result, I have taken advice this weekend from Public Health England and their clear message is that the school should remain open.

"I would also like to inform you that we have been thoroughly planning over the past few days for the potential issues that we could face as a school over the coming days, weeks and months.

"As the situation unfolds, you will be advised in a timely manner of measures designed to both protect our school community as well as allow education to be delivered."

"In the event of an enforced closure of the school, work will be set via the Remote Access icon on our website."
