School invents fun ways to learn during lockdown

Primary children at a West Lothian Primary School held an invention convention during lockdown.

Primary one to three pupils were invited to the virtual event by their teacher at St Anthony’s in Bathgate and asked to make their own creations.

The kids got to work with their parents and sent in pictures of variety of inventions to the school’s online portal.

St Anthony’s Primary School, head teacher, Johanne Gardener  said: “At St Anthony’s Primary, we engage and motivate our learners through a play-based learning pedagogy.

"During the period of school closures, we did not want to lose this aspect of our learning and teaching approach, so have incorporated this into our daily online learning experiences.

"At present our learning theme is “Play” and we have set the children a variety of play based challenges which encourage our pupils to use a variety of important life skills such as designing, planning, constructing, problem solving and engineering.

"Our ‘Invention Convention’ STEM Challenge was one which has inspired our children to be innovative thinkers and further develop a curiosity for the world around them. We are so proud of all of our pupils throughout the school for their hard work, dedication and resilience, and thank our parents/carers for their ongoing support.

"We have a lovely St Anthony’s family and I am blessed to be part of it.”
