Summer school holidays 2026 have been extended across several Indian states as rising temperatures and severe heatwave conditions continue to affect daily life. Authorities in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and other regions have either advanced school summer vacations or revised school timings following warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD has predicted that heatwave conditions across North and Central India are likely to intensify between mid-May and June, with temperatures in several cities already crossing 45°C.
As a result, CBSE, ICSE, government and private schools in multiple states have announced longer summer school holidays 2026 to protect students from extreme heat exposure.
Delhi-NCR Heatwave Triggers Extended Summer Holidays 2026
The Delhi-NCR region has witnessed some of the highest temperatures of the season, prompting authorities to implement precautionary measures for schoolchildren.
In Delhi-NCR, summer school holidays 2026 will continue from May 11 to July 1, giving students a break of around 51 days. Officials have advised children and elderly residents to avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours due to the ongoing heatwave.
Several districts in Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram have also shifted schools to morning schedules, with classes running between 7 am and noon to reduce exposure to extreme heat.

Delhi
Schools in Delhi will remain closed from May 11 to July 1, 2026.
Uttar Pradesh
Summer holidays in Uttar Pradesh schools will run from May 20 to June 15, 2026.
Rajasthan
Rajasthan schools will remain shut from May 17 to June 20 amid severe heatwave conditions.
Haryana
Schools across Haryana will observe summer holidays from June 1 to June 30.
Bihar
Bihar schools will remain closed from June 1 to June 20.
Telangana
Telangana had already announced summer holidays from April 24 to June 11 due to early heatwave conditions.
More States Revise School Timings Due to Heatwave
Apart from Delhi-NCR, several other states have also introduced changes in school operations.
West Bengal has already closed schools in several districts except Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Punjab is reportedly implementing phased closures depending on local weather conditions.
In Odisha, summer holidays were advanced from April 27 following approval from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh announced school closures from April 20 to June 15. Andhra Pradesh also declared holidays between April 24 and June 11 and warned private schools against conducting classes during the vacation period.
