Pupils isolating after school hit with another Covid case

A total of nine pupils have been ordered to isolate after a positive coronavirus case at a Westbury-On-Trym school for deaf children.

Elmfield was forced to partially close last term after confirmed Covid cases at the school.

And now, just two weeks into the new half-term, another person at the primary school, on Greystoke Avenue, has contracted the virus.

Students will have to quarantine until Monday, November 23.

Headteacher Jeremy Law said: "No headteacher wants to be in a position where some of their children and staff have to be asked to in self-isolate, but when we do so we are following the rules, procedures and guidance set out by Public Health England.

"Schools have, quite rightly, been asked to stay open to minimise the negative impact of the virus on children’s educations and to allow other workers to go to work, but schools reside in their communities, where the Coronavirus is circulating.

"Despite the risks, school staff continue coming in to work to teach and support the children in their care.

"While our children are in isolation, we will continue to support them in their homes, using a range of distance learning resources and technologies, as well as providing our normal curriculum provision for children still in school.”

Hundreds of Bristol children are already isolating after a number of schools have confirmed coronavirus cases in the first weeks back.

You should book a Covid-19 test if your child has at least one of the following:

  • A high temperature - This means if they feel hot to touch on the chest or back. You do not need to measure their temperature.
  • A new continuous cough - This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours. If your child usually has a cough, it may be worse than usual).
  • A loss or change to their sense of smell or taste - They've noticed they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

If your child does not have symptoms of coronavirus but has other cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, they do not need to be tested, and they or members of your household do not need to self-isolate. Your child can attend school if fit to do so.
