School garden trashed by vandals - and staff say the culprits could even be former pupils

A primary school garden which children raised funds for has been trashed by vandals - and staff say the culprits could even be former pupils.

Staff at St James' CE Primary School, in Farnworth, returned to work this week to find the school's Reading Garden had been targeted by heartless yobs over the half-term break.

The garden was set up by the school's 'eco team', made up of parents and pupils, and was paid for by their fundraising efforts - which began three years ago.

But the much-loved garden has now been ruined - and staff say the perpetrators may already be known to the school.

In a post on Facebook, a school spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, during the holidays somebody decided to ruin our Reading Garden, as you can see in the photo.

"The staff work very hard to make our school a happy, welcoming and interesting environment for our St James family. When things like this happen, it is devastating to us all.

"It is even more upsetting when there are reports that this damage is caused by young adults who previously attended our school and are still scaling the roof on a regular basis.

"It is very dangerous to climb on the school roof, as displayed on signs around the school. We wouldn't want anyone getting injured.

"If you see anyone on the school roof please report it to 101, so we can keep everyone safe and happy."

It's not the first time that the Reading Garden has been targeted.

Last May, callous thieves swiped outdoor furniture from the garden.

The site had become a haven for teachers to relax in during the early months of the Covid pandemic while they cared for vulnerable pupils and the children of key workers.
