School forced to close after thieves ransacked classrooms for laptops in ‘despicable’ raid

A primary school was forced to close after thieves broke in and stole thousands of pounds worth of equipment.

Pupils at Ashmead Primary School in Lewisham were told to stay at home on Monday after it was ransacked by thieves who made off with laptops, iMacs, iPads and other electronics.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Sean O’Flynn said windows had been crowbarred open and doors smashed through on Sunday. He added: “All classrooms apart from two were broken into as well as the office and the locked cabinets.”

The school reopened yesterday.

A parent of one student described the burglary as “utterly despicable”.

Police said the break-in was reported shortly before 6am on Sunday and two men were arrested nearby after being followed from the school’s premises.
