School forced to close after 'significant' Covid outbreak affecting staff and students

A primary school has had to close following a "significant" coronavirus outbreak in both pupils and staff.

Powys Council has confirmed the temporary closure of Llangynidr Primary School in Crickhowell, which teaches more than 100 children, following an increase in positive cases.

The council stated that due to the amount of staff isolating, the school could not safely be opened.

As a result 112 pupils aged between three and 11 are unable to attend classes.

A spokesman for Powys Council said: "There have been a significant number of positive cases of Covid-19 in both the pupils and staff at Llangynidr Primary School.

"The school has had to close for operational reasons due to having insufficient staff available to be able to open the school safely."

Owner of The Walnut Tree Riverside Cafe Bar in Crickhowell, Peter Casaru, said the wider town has also felt the effects of this increase and said his business, "which is normally full every day, has experienced quietest time ever".

The closure follows news that while the current infection rate in Wales has dropped the number of positive cases in "school-aged" children continues to grow.

The council did not confirm when the school would be re-opening.
