In questioning whether David Cameron’s father might have adjusted his personal affairs such that Eton College could collect gift aid on school fees paid, John Smith (Letters, 6 April) overlooks a rather glaring detail: school fees are not eligible for gift aid.

As a parent who pays school fees for two children out of taxable income, I have no hesitation in stating that I believe this tax policy to be morally correct, however painful the consequence may be for me personally.

I apologise in advance for the response which may ensue as a result of inserting hard facts into a discussion which has so far run largely on innuendo and envy.
