School dinner lady 'sacked after giving child lunch he couldn't pay for'

A dinner lady has reportedly been fired after she let a child have a lunch he didn't have the money to pay for.

Bonnie Kimball said she didn't think it was a big deal and had told the student to pay the next day, confident that he would.

And sure enough, she says he paid the $8 (£6.29) he owed the following day at the Mascoma Valley Regional High School in New Hampshire, US.

Bonnie says however that she was fired about a week later by the district manager of Café Services, the food services company that employed her.

The dinner lady, who had worked at the school for four and a half years, claims the food services company accused her of theft.

A spokesman for the company said the student wouldn't have gone without a meal as pupils who go to the lunch line without money can get a starter or sandwich plus side dishes or fresh fruit and milk.

A letter, seen by CNN , told Bonnie: "On March 28, a District Manager was on-site and witnessed a student coming through the line with multiple food items that you did not charge him for.

"This (is) in strict violation of our Cash Handling Procedures, the Schools Charge Policy and Federal Regulation governing free meals.

"Your final has been processed and disbursed to you."

But a statement by Jaime Matheson of the Café Services says they would not let an employee go because they provided this lunch to a student.

He said they can't go into details because of confidentiality but said when company policies aren't followed, action is taken which can include termination.

A gofundme page titled 'funds to help lunch lady' has been set up.

According to reports, two other members of lunch staff have quit in protest.
