School crossing patrol wardens issued with bodycams to deter abuse from drivers

Lollipop men and women are being issued with bodycams in an attempt to stamp out abuse from angry motorists.

Essex County Council will trial the use of the cameras at road crossings in Clacton-on-Sea and Basildon. Local councillor Tony Ball said there was a "very small minority of drivers who are impatient and sometimes even abusive".

The trials of the bodycams at Cloes Lane, Clacton-on-Sea, and Whitmore Way, Basildon, will be evaluated after a four-week trial. It is an offence if a driver does not stop when signalled to do so by a lollipop man or woman.

Failing to stop at a school crossing patrol can lead to a fine of up to £1,000 and three points on your driving licence.

Mr Ball, a Tory cabinet member at Essex County Council, branded the abuse of lollipop men and women as “utterly acceptable behaviour”.

He said: “The majority of Essex drivers respect school crossing patrol officers and the safety of the children and families they help to cross the road.

"Unfortunately, there is that very small minority of drivers who are impatient and sometimes even abusive toward the crossing patrols.

“This is utterly unacceptable behaviour. Our School Crossing Patrol Officers are wonderful people, loved by the communities they serve, and who work in rain, wind and snow to keep the children of Essex safe.”

Essex Police's head of roads policing, Adam Pipe, said: "Keeping Essex roads safe is a top priority for us and we welcome initiatives that help us do that."
