School crash driver 'grateful' for forgiveness from boy's family

The woman who drove her car into a classroom, killing two boys, has thanked the family of one of the victims who broadcast a message of forgiveness on social media.

Maha Al-Shennag is facing charges for the fatal crash into a Banksia Road Primary School classroom in the Sydney suburb of Greenacre on Tuesday.

One of the eight-year-old boys' funerals was held on Thursday at a packed Lakemba Mosque and he was buried at Rookwood cemetery.

The undertaker, Ahmad Hraichie, posted a Facebook Live video sitting alongside the boy's father with his son's coffin shown behind them while they were on their way to the cemetery.

They had a message of forgiveness for Ms Al-Shennag.

"We have a special message here for the lady that was involved in the accident," Mr Hraichie translated for the father.

"The father said that all this stuff happening about the threats to lady and the abuse is not from them … they have forgiven.

"If anything, they want to sit with this lady and talk with her and tell her 'we forgive you' … once it is over she is welcome to come and sit with the family and have a meal and talk about how they can move forward with this problem."

This afternoon, Ms Al-Shennag's lawyer released a statement saying that his client had heard the message.

"Ms Al-Shennag has told me that she is very grateful for [the father's] message of forgiveness and compassion," Nicholas Hanna said.

"Ms Al-Shennag wishes to apologise with all of her heart to [him] and to each of the victims, their families and the community in general.

"Her thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by this tragedy."

The mother-of-four has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving for the death of the two boys.

She was also charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and cause actual bodily harm by misconduct, in relation to three girls who were injured and hospitalised following the crash.
