School confirms coronavirus case and sends class home

Winterbourne Academy has sent home a Year Eight class after a confirmed coronavirus case.

The 1,808-pupil mixed secondary on Winterbourne High Street informed parents of the "single confirmed case" in a letter on October 15.

Addressing parents of "non-close contacts", the school wrote: "We have followed Public Health England (PHE) guidance and are working closely with PHE and South Gloucestershire Council's public health and education teams.

"In line with the guidance, we have taken the decision to close class 806 for 14 days.

"All students from this bubble group are isolating at home for this period.

"The rest of the school remains open, and provided your child remains well and shows no symptoms of Covid-19, they should continue to attend school as normal."

Winterbourne Academy has been approached for more details.

We have reported today (October 21) how Redmaids' High School in Westbury-on-Trym has sent Year-9 pupils home after a third case in the school, and Hengrove's Oasis Academy New Oak has closed due to a case.

At least 65 schools in and around Bristol have confirmed cases since the start of the academic year in September - the full list can be found here.

You should book a Covid-19 test if your child has at least one of the following:

  • A high temperature - This means if they feel hot to touch on the chest or back. You do not need to measure their temperature.

  • A new continuous cough - This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours. If your child usually has a cough, it may be worse than usual).

  • A loss or change to their sense of smell or taste - They've noticed they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

If your child does not have symptoms of coronavirus but has other cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, they do not need to be tested.

They and members of your household do not need to self-isolate.

In those circumstances, your child can attend school if fit to do so.
