School closures: Full list as heavy snow forces dozens of teachers to shut doors

Dozens of schools are being forced to close today as Britain is struck by a blizzard.

Snow and ice has begun to blanket the UK after the Met Office issued a five-day weather alert and The National Grid fires up its emergency coal stations.

It was one of the coldest nights of the year so far as scores of schools in the Scottish Highlands have announced closures due to treacherous conditions, and a handful of schools in Wales are not expected to open today.

In England, schools as far south as Hampshire have closed due to snow.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a level three cold weather alert for the whole of England.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for the next three days as Arctic winds bring a sharp change in conditions.

An alert for snow and ice is in place today for a large area covering Scotland and the North East, with southern and central England also under a similar warning.

At least nine schools in Hampshire will be closed today due to snow.

Four secondary schools, 23 primary schools and 20 nurseries are closed today in the Highlands.

Just before 7am, at least six schools in Wales are closed today.
