School closed after man's body found on the grounds in 'unexplained death'

A school is shut today after a man’s body was found on the grounds.

Bedfordshire Police officers cordoned off an area around Bedford Academy in Mile Road this morning.

In a statement, Bedfordshire police said: “We are currently at the scene of an unexplained death in Mile Road, Bedford.

“Officers were called today following the discovery of a body.

“The man has yet to be formally identified.”

A spokeswoman for the force said officers were called in around 7.50am following the discovery.

East of England Ambulance Service have also confirmed they attended the Academy after reports of an unresponsive person having been found.

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 7.53 am with reports of a person who was unresponsive in Mile Road, Bedford.

"We sent an ambulance, rapid response vehicle and an ambulance officer."

David Morris, chief executive officer of Heart Academies Trust, the umbrella trust to which the school belongs, said "the decision has been taken to close the school for today".

Bedford Academy is a mixed secondary school and sixth form in the Kingsbrook area of Bedford.

Its pupils are primarily from the Kingsbrook, Cauldwell and Newnham areas of Bedford, as well as the village of Elstow.
