School children to be 'escorted to toilet' by teachers in strict new rules

Teachers will escort students to the toilet during lessons under new safety rules being rolled out at a secondary school in Somerset.

The strict regime at West Somerset College also states students must be silent when they walk around the school from January 2020.

Assistant headteacher Mary Cranna announced the changes in a letter to parents and pupils informing them of "changes to the behaviour system", Somerset Live reports.

The new rules state that teachers will be accompanying children to the toilet during lessons "for their own safety" and children must walk around school in silence.

The word "silence" was emphasised in bold type - and that "high expectations will be enforced at all times".

In the letter sent out on December 20, Ms Cranna wrote: "In order to ensure the safety of students at all times, we will be escorting students to the toilet if they need to use the loo during a lesson.

"Students with a medical reason will be permitted to use the toilet as they currently do.

"We expect students to use the toilet during their free time, at break and lunch, in order to prevent interruptions to lesson time and to support them in making the best possible progress."

It also said: "During this time [before lessons], tutors and teachers will be checking uniform, knowledge organisers and equipment.

"Tutors and teachers will then escort students in silence to lessons.

"High expectations will be enforced at all times and there will be consequences for students who do not follow the college’s expectations."
