A bus full of Edinburgh school children crashed into a tree during rush hour this morning, leaving a top deck window completely shattered.
The number 27 bus was making its way from Hunter's Tryst towards the city centre when the collision took place. One branch smashed through a window, leaving the 'terrified' youngsters covered in shards of glass.
Images show the top deck window almost completely destroyed, with the chaotic scenes inside the bus as passengers rushed to disembark.
According to Edinburgh Live, Lothian Buses say they are looking into the incident - with Edinburgh Council confirming on Twitter that a forestry team has been contacted.
One passenger, who was on the bus at the time of the crash, said: "I was going to work on bus 27 from Hunter's Tryst going towards the city centre.
"Lothian Bus driver was trying to beat the traffic, instead of waiting on the traffic lights, he decided to go ahead on the Glenlockhart Road junction, on the left line, forcing the way through the tree brunches.
"The bus was full of children going to school. One of the windows smashed and shattered glass went all over the terrified kids.
"I went back up with some lady from the bus, we checked with the kids if they are ok and if no one was hurt, another few minutes passed and the driver didn't show up until almost everyone was already outside the bus. They were taking the bus behind to get to work, school.
"It is unacceptable how the driver handled this situation and that he was risking the health of the passengers. Someone could be hit with the tree brunch or blinded with the shattered glass.. and he didn't even bother to check."
Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Council have been contacted for further comment.
