'I offered to help anyway I could': Witness tells of bid to save bus crash victim

The woman was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

A 65-year-old woman has been seriously injured after being hit by a school bus in Tasmania.

Police and emergency crews attended the scene after the woman was hit on the East Derwent Highway, at Rose Bay, near the Tasman Bridge, police said.

There were no children on the bus, police confirmed to the ABC. The 62-year-old driver was expected to be breathalysed.

Witness Lanna Story said she saw the moment of impact as she drove past.

"I saw the poor lady step out from the footpath and the bus try and stop, but unfortunately not being able to stop in time," Ms Story said.

"I called emergency services, turned around and came back and did what I could before the paramedics got here.

"People [were] sort of standing around in a bit of a state of shock ... so I just offered to help in any way I could and tried to keep her calm ... make sure she wasn't moved until the paramedics got there."

The woman has been taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition.

Police have advised the scene in now clear and traffic is proceeding normally.
