School bus flips over sending children flying before ultra-calm driver saves them

Children on their way to school were filmed flying around in a school bus after it crashed when a car driver failed to stop at a red light.

The bus flipped over at a junction and the children were caught on a camera inside the bus being thrown around.

The clip, released by the  Ohio State Highway Patrol, shows the 25 children crying and screaming in shock.

Their 74-year-old driver Danny Hupp then speaks to the children and extremely calmly, and helps the youngsters escape through the emergency exit.

Mr Hupp and eight other students needed hospital treatment in Ohio, USA, but were not in a serious condition.

Ayden Lutz who was on board the bus told ABC6 in Ohio: "We were pretty lucky, honestly. The whole front end of the bus was basically in pieces.

"I just remember the bus sliding to the left and it flipped me, hitting the ceiling.”

Headteacher Lisa Householder said she her students were heroic and she "couldn't be more proud".

She said: “They were helping each out on the bus.

"They took handle of the situation and were doing a phenomenal job."

Police say the driver of the Ford Mustang that they say ran the red light was Joseph Thornton

The 42-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries and troopers said he had been driving on a suspended licence.
