HACKENSACK, N.J. _ The driver of the Paramus school bus that collided Thursday with a dump truck on Route 80 was apparently trying to use the highway's police turnaround to pull onto its eastbound lanes, a source close to the investigation said Friday morning.
The driver appeared to have attempted the maneuver after missing the westbound exit for Waterloo Village, which was the intended destination.
The ensuing crash injured 43 of the bus's 45 passengers, and killed one student and one teacher.
Officials have been tight-lipped about the cause of the accident, which happened in the interstate's left lane and on the median.
The Morris County Prosecutor's Office, which is handling media queries, said it has no plans for a Friday news conference.
