School bus driver, dozen students injured in crash near Wheaton North

Oct. 30--A school bus crash near Wheaton North High School on Friday morning resulted in a trip to the hospital for the bus driver and 12 students, police said. Their injuries weren't life-threatening.

About 7:35 a.m., the driver of a Honda Accord heading south on Purnell Street stopped at a stop sign and planned to turn left onto Geneva Road. At the same time, the driver of a van pulling a compressor was heading east on Geneva, and the school bus was heading west on Geneva, said Wheaton police Lt. Bob Miller.

When the Accord turned left onto Geneva, the driver didn't see the van and hit the compressor, Miller said. This caused the car to spin, lose control and get T-boned by the school bus.

The full bus had about 50 students, Miller said. Twelve students and the bus driver were transported to Central DuPage Hospital after complaining of various injuries, from headaches to wrist pain. The driver of the Accord also was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Accord was hit "pretty severely" by the school bus, Miller said.

"Good thing there wasn't a front-seat passenger," he said. "This could've been much worse."

The car and the school bus were both towed, and police left the scene about 8:45 a.m., Miller said. Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
