School bubble closes after positive Covid test - just a day after pupils returned to class

Pupils at a primary school in Greater Manchester have been sent home after a positive Covid test at their school.

Parents with children in the Reception class at Westfield Community School in Wigan received a call on Tuesday morning telling them to collect them from class.

The closure comes just a day after schools in England reopened to all pupils in phase one of the easing of lockdown measures.

In a message sent to parents, headteacher Tim Sherriff said: "I am writing to inform you that pre-school Reg 2 will be closed to all pupils until further notice due to a positive lateral flow Covid-19 test result.

"We will contact you with further information including a date when your child is permitted to return, as soon as possible."

Primary school children are not being asked to take the lateral flow tests, only secondary and college students are being tested before heading back to class - and after a further two tests in school, they're being asked to self-test at home twice a week.

One mum, who was asked to collect her child from the Worsley Hall school, said she was told the test related to a member of staff, but this hasn't been confirmed.

She told the Manchester Evening News: "I took my kids in school this morning at 9am, then about half 11 I got a text to pick up.

"It's not great when they've only just gone back in."

School staff are being routinely tested with the lateral flow tests, which give results within 30 minutes.

Despite them not being carried out on primary school children, every adult in a household with kids in education, no matter what their age - and the support bubbles of those kids - are being encouraged to test regularly at home. The same applies to any household where there are primary or secondary school staff.

The aim of the tests is to pick up cases of Covid where people have no symptoms and help reduce the transmission of the virus.

Today's bubble closure is the first we've been made aware of in Greater Manchester, but families and teachers are all too aware that further disruption is inevitable.
