School bans shoes 'that don't look like shoes'

Pupils have been banned from wearing an 'unacceptable' type of shoe as it goes against the school uniform policy.

Parents got in touch with Winsford Academy ahead of the new school year to enquire about whether a certain type of footwear would be acceptable for pupils to wear.

The school clarified to parents that the Kickers Tovni Pacers would be banned as they are not considered to be ' school shoes'.

A number of parents had already got in touch with the school to ask if they would be acceptable before purchasing or removing the labels.

The Cheshire school, on Grange Lane, took to Facebook to clarify that the 'patent leather version' of the shoe would be acceptable but the trainer version was banned.

The shoes are a black plimsoll in style, with shoelaces. Kickers advertises them as "a school shoe that also looks good enough to fit in as a trainer on the streets".

The reaction of social media on the school's post was mixed, with some parents reacting with 'likes', 'angry' emojis and 'haha' emojis on Facebook.

Headteacher Gary Evans confirmed to CheshireLive that 'footwear looks too much like trainers', however the 'patent leather version' are acceptable for pupils to wear.

Mr Evans also confirmed these shoes and many other shoes were part of a document that was sent to parents a few weeks ago.

According to Winsford Academy's uniform policy, children should wear 'plain black shoes'.

They should also have 'no flashes of colour' and should be 'formal in appearance'.

The school adds it should not resemble a trainer 'which means that they should not have a trainer style lace or a sports sole'.

The document included a brochure of shoes that are accepted and said: "The school has the final decision over the suitability of footwear.

"School shoes are smart. School shoes raise the standards of the school uniform that prepares young people for the world of work."

On the school's Facebook post, Winsford Academy thanked parents who had emailed to check if the shoes were OK before purchasing them.

The full statement said: "A few parents have asked if these (Kickers Tovni Pacers) are acceptable school shoes but as they look very much like a trainer the school does not consider them to be 'school shoes'.

"Just to clarify, the patent leather version of this shoe is acceptable. It is just the shoes in the picture below that are not.

"Here is the link to the acceptable shoes for school which was sent out to all parents, including new Y7 parents, at the end of last term.

" Thank you to all parents who have emailed to check if shoes are ok before purchasing or removing the labels.

"We appreciate your support in ensuring your children are dressed correctly for school."
