Schneider paces Devils to 3-1 win over Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. _ For the second time in three games, the Devils may have lost one of their defensemen for an indefinite period.

And, for the second time in two games, goalie Cory Schneider was a difference maker, even though he missed out on a second straight shutout.

But his 29-save gem paced a 3-1 win over the Hurricanes on Tuesday night at PNC Arena.

He made 22 saves in Monday's 3-0 win over the visiting Bruins and the Devils, on tired legs and with five defensemen for two-thirds of the game, played a tight defensive game, not taking many offensive risks or creating many odd-man rushes as they were outshot, 30-18, a season low for shots.

Still, the Devils (16-16-7) have now won two straight for the first time since Dec. 3-6 and earned just their second regulation win on the road this season, both coming at Carolina.

Devils coach John Hynes said before Tuesday's game Schneider's performance on Monday marked "probably the best he's tracked the puck." But Schneider was better on Tuesday, not allowing many rebounds and staying square to the puck on the deflections.

"He really reads the play well," Hynes said. "He doesn't overreact to a lot of shots."

Cam Ward, making his 13th straight start for the Hurricanes (16-14-7), who fell to 11-4-1 at home, was tested rarely.

Greene skated directly to the Devils' dressing room at 18:13 of the first period after Jordan Staal's shot from the right circle rode up the defenseman's stick and underneath his visor.

Greene went off the ice holding his right eye and unable to open it. He did not return to the bench or the game.

The 34-year-old captain was playing in his 350th straight game, the third longest streak in franchise history.

The Devils lost defenseman John Moore to a concussion in Saturday's 6-2 loss to the visiting Capitals when he was checked into the endboards by Tom Wilson and his head violently whiplashed against the glass. Moore lay motionless on the ice momentarily before eventually being carted off and taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

The Devils won the first two games against the Hurricanes, including a 4-1 road win on Nov. 6. Since that game, the Hurricanes had been 10-1-1 at their home rink coming into Tuesday's game.

Schneider carried over his strong positional play from Monday night, making 10 saves in the first period, including on Sebastian Aho's power-play wraparound try at the right post at 10:08, as the Devils were held without a shot the final 8:20 of the period after taking five of the game's first six shots.

Then, the Devils were held to just three shots in the second period.

Still, they took a 1-0 lead at 14:56 on a great passing sequence. Defenseman Damon Severson, high in the slot, got it to Michael Cammalleri in the left circle and Cammalleri sent a tape-to-tape pass to Adam Henrique in the right circle for the goal on just the Devils' ninth shot of the game.

It was Cammalleri's 100th point as a Devil and it also snapped a five-game stretch without a point.

Cammalleri also notched his first goal in 15 games as he tracked down the puck in the right, spun and slapped a shot past a screened Ward for a 2-0 lead at 11:30 of the third period.

But the Hurricanes responded 54 seconds later as Aho spoiled Schneider's shutout bid to make it 2-1 as he got a second chance at the crease after he tried to tip in defenseman Ron Hainsey's shot.

Kyle Palmieri added an empty-net goal at 18:00 of the third period.

The Devils actually started the second period two defensemen short but Kyle Quincey quickly returned to the team's bench from the dressing room at 3:38.
