The Australian National University's council has reappointed Brian Schmidt as vice-chancellor.
A letter informed staff and students of Professor Schmidt's reappointment about 3pm on Sunday, with his contract having been extended for five years until December 2025.
Professor Schmidt started in the university's vice-chancellor role in 2016.
On Sunday, ANU chancellor and former foreign affairs minister, Julie Bishop, said Professor Schmidt had proved to be "an outstanding and committed" university leader in his first term.
"[He] has shared and shaped an ambitious vision for the university for the coming years and the council and I back this mission," Ms Bishop said.
"This vision will not only set the university up for ongoing success for decades to come but will ensure ANU long remains an institution that serves all Australians, our nation, the region and the world."
Professor Schmidt said it was an honour to serve as the university's vice-chancellor, but also a responsibility he didn't "take lightly".
"Trust is our currency and what makes ANU distinctive," he said.
"That trust is hard won and I will work hard not only to keep the trust that council and the university have placed in me, but also so that ANU has the trust of all."
Professor Schmidt is the only university president in the world to hold a Nobel Prize, which he earned in 2011 for his work studying exploding stars.
