Week six of András Schiff's Beethoven lecture recitals are now available to download, here and on our classical music site.
Schiff has now reached the rich seam of middle-period works - into volume three in my battered ABRSM edition - that send a shiver down the spine of any piano addict: no 22 in F major, no 24 in F sharp major, no 25 in G major and the revelatory Les Adieux, no 26 in E-flat major. And, most gloriously, this section includes the monumental Appassionata - always associated in my mind with a wartime film of Myra Hess at the National Gallery, playing those crashing F minor chords at with a stubborn intensity that takes on all the death and mayhem around.
As before, the lectures are all available to download from the same page at theguardian.com/Schiff. Alternatively, subscribe to the Guardian's Culture feed if you want to receive each lecture automatically as soon as it's published.
