Schar's comeback and academy call-ups - what we learned from Newcastle's training pictures

Newcastle United's players were in training on Friday ahead of this weekend's clash with Arsenal.

The Magpies will be hoping to maintain their recent momentum and effectively secure survival with victory at St James' Park on Sunday.

Steve Bruce's side are nine points clear of the relegation zone with just five matches remaining, but will be keen to continue their good form until they are mathematically safe.

Mikel Arteta's team arrive on Tyneside on the back of a first-leg defeat at Villarreal, and the Gunners attention may be on the return fixture in their Europa League semi-final.

However, Arsenal have already beaten United twice this season, with an extra-time success in the FA Cup third-round quickly followed up by an emphatic home league victory in January.

Here's what we learned from the latest round of Newcastle training pictures ahead of Sunday's encounter with Arsenal:

Schar's comeback

The Swiss international stepped up his recovery with a 45-minute appearance for the club's second-string against Crystal Palace earlier this week.

Schar was stretchered off during the Magpies' 3-2 victory against Southampton in February with knee ligament damage sustained in a nasty collision with Jan Bednarek.

The 29-year-old was forced to undergo surgery, and there were initial fears he could miss the rest of Newcastle's run-in and potentially the rearranged European Championships.

However, Schar has made good progress in his recovery and was pictured in action with the main group on Friday.

Cross chance

Bradley Cross joined the Magpies in October last year following a two-year spell in German football.

The former Schalke trainee has been a regular for the under-23s this term, and was handed a two-year deal following a successful trial.

Cross is yet to make a first-team appearance so far on Tyneside, but was handed an opportunity to impress Bruce in the latest training session.

Thompson call-up

Another academy prospect given a chance to impress was teenage goalkeeper Max Thompson.

Karl Darlow's injury meant the 16-year-old was called up to training alongside Martin Dubravka and Mark Gillespie.

The Ponteland High School student was handed a scholarship with the Magpies having impressed in day release sessions with the club.
