Schalke sign Republic of Ireland under-17s starlet Dan Rose

German club Schalke 04 have signed Republic of Ireland youth international Dan Rose on a long term deal.

The 16-year-old goalkeeper moves from Everton after rejecting a reported three-year deal at the Liverpool club in favour of heading to the continent.

English born Rose, whose mother is from Ireland, will become the club's first non-German youth goalkeeper as he joins their under-19 side.

Rose is now the third Irish teenager plying their trade in Germany's top tier, alongside 17-year-old Wolfsburg defender Anselmo Garcia-MacNulty and 19-year-old Borussia Mönchengladbach attacker Conor Noss.

Rose starred for Colin O'Brien's Ireland U17 side, playing in last November’s wins over Andorra, Montenegro and Israel as they advanced to the next stage of the European Championship qualifiers.

But the elite phase of qualifying, as well as the tournament finals itself, have all been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
