Usman Khawaja stranded just shy of first Test double century as rain returns to SCG on day two of final Test against South Africa

Rain stops play on day two at the SCG with Usman Khawaja five runs short of a maiden Test double century in the first innings of the final Test against South Africa.

It came after Steve Smith scored 104 — his 30th Test century, passing Don Bradman's mark of 29 — and Travis Head smashed a 59-ball 70 to help Australia to 4-475 on another rain-shortened day in Sydney.

Look back on day two as it happened in our live blog, check out the live scorecard or listen to live ball-by-ball coverage on ABC Radio

Stumps: Australia 4-475 (Khawaja 195, Renshaw 5)

By Simon Smale

Key Event

Well, that's it for the day folks.

Another early start in store tomorrow morning as Australia possibly bats for another small spell to get Usman Khawaja to his maiden double ton.

After that, the bowlers will be let loose on a pitch that has not misbehaved at all for the first two days of the match, but is exhibiting some scarring.

We'll be back bright and early for that, so we look forward to seeing you then.

Victoria beat New South Wales in WNCL

Remember earlier we updated you on Elyse Perry's stunning, career-high list A score of 147 in the Women's National Cricket League?

Well, Ms Perry also took the opening wicket of the day on the way to 2-26 as Victoria wrapped up victory at St Kilda by 88 runs.

Australia on the precipice of a new record

By Simon Smale

ABC Stato Ric Finlay has an update on how close Australia is to having a record four double centurions in a single Test summer.

If you need reminding..

  • Marnus Labuschagne, 204 in Perth
  • Steve Smith, 200* in Perth
  • David Warner, 200 in Melbourne

Don't you dare declare, Patrick.

Matthew Renshaw, or 'Renny bleugh' is allowed to field

By Simon Smale

Is Renshaw allowed to field when the Aussies are bowling?

- Leon

Yes he is.

We had a situation like this in the Commonwealth Games final when, on the morning of the match, Australia all-rounder Tahlia McGrath tested positive to COVID-19 and was still allowed to play.

She even took a catch but could not celebrate that with her teammates.

So Renshaw is allowed to play, and field, as long as he stays away from everyone else.

Usman Khawaja just told Fox Sport that the closest he's going to get to his Queensland teammate in the middle will be for a fist tap with the gloves on.

He even said he's taught his youngest daughter to say: "Renny bleugh" when she sees him.

So there you go.

There is a bit about

By Simon Smale

The issue will be the light if and when the rain stops, with plenty of low cloud about the traps.

Rain stops play

By Simon Smale

Key Event

A strange little drinks break for a strange little match ends, the players get back into position, and then the umpires take the players off.

Cricket is so weird sometimes.

Khawaja is, temporarily we hope, stranded on 195.

They're taking a drink?

By Jon Healy

The umpires came together and we all thought they were gonna take them off for rain, but instead they've called drinks onto the field and it looks like they're going to change the ball too.

131st over - Rabada to Khawaja

By Jon Healy

Khawaja gets up the other end, obviously keen to reach 200 in singles, and Matt Renshaw has a look at Rabada.

A couple of balls are staying low out there.

Renshaw clips off his hip and steals the strike from his state captain to start the next over. He has a little cough in the crook of his elbow before there mid-pitch discussion. Hope he's feeling OK out there, batting in the rain too.

130th over - Harmer continues

By Jon Healy

Renshaw couldn't find his glove before he came out to bat. Poor fella.

Khawaja moves to 194 as he gives Renshaw the strike. I imagine he'll try to get Khawaja to 200 before really teeing off.

Yep, nothing audacious from him there. Happy to just make it through.

129th over - Here comes Matty Renshaw for one of the weirdest Test recalls imaginable

By Jon Healy

FOUR FIRST BALL! Matt Renshaw clips off the hip and that's four runs off one ball.

He's going to be in T20 mode here.

Head's out!! He's holed out in the deep of course

By Jon Healy

Travis Head crushed a short ball very cleanly and it went straight to the man in the deep, Rassie van der Dussen. He didn't really pick it up until the last second and ultimately took a really good low catch.

Head can't believe he picked him out.

129th over - Rabada continues

By Jon Healy

Head is on the charge.

128th over - Khawaja facing Harmer

By Jon Healy

Khawaja's not going all out attack anymore. Maybe just leaving that to Head. Khawaja turns a single to leg.

Head brings up the 100-run partnership off 11 deliveries with a cross-bat slap through the off side.

BOOOOM! Shuffling down and whacking Harmer back over his head for six runs. Head might not be the best player of spin in the world, but when he's going he hits it as cleanly as anyone.

Two more on the sweep and that makes it 13 off the over.

127th over - Rabada to Head

By Jon Healy

Rampage from Head, up over the slips for a few more.

BANG! Another pull shot from another ball that really isn't that short, but he doesn't care. Four runs.

Four more! Absolute power through the covers this time. He threw everything at that.

FIFTY FOR TRAVIS HEAD

By Jon Healy

Once again he comes out and reaches his half-century at better then a run-a-ball.

In a summer where Aussie bats have shone, Head is the only batter who has passed 50 in at least one innings of all five Tests. Fair effort in a top team.

126th over - Head and Khawaja eyeing off milestones

By Jon Healy

Head is on 46 off 45. Khawaja is 186 off 357.

Harmer is bowling and Head uses his feet, but can only inside edge onto his front pad.

125th over - Umpires are chatting about the rain

By Jon Healy

Kagiso Rabada returns to the attack with all eyes on the skies.

French cut for two from Head. He's trying to hit everything at the moment. No defence in his blood.

Whack. Short and crunched through mid-wicket. Well played.

Lovely shot down the ground by Head and Marco Jansen does well to track it down and prevent the boundary. Head is going at better than a run a ball once again.
